Pattachitra Paintings

Pattachitra Paintings are one of the India’s oldest forms of folk art popular for its depiction of mythological stories elaborate motifs and religious themes. The name Pattachitra comes from the Sanskrit words “Patta” meaning cloth, and “Chitra” meaning painting. Traditionally done on cloth, this art form can also be prepared on dried palm leaves or other surfaces. The cloth used for Pattachitra is handwoven and is primmed with a layer of natural adhesives such as tamarind seeds to give it a smooth and durable surface. In 2014, Pattachitra was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to help protects its authenticity.
